Up House in Herriman, Utah

For Blair Bangerter, the connection apparently ran much deeper.

A contractor by trade, and owner of Bangerter Homes in South Jordan, Blair thought of a great way to bring the movie Up to life, and simultaneously put his name and business squarely in the public eye. He built the house from Up. That’s right, HE BUILT THE HOUSE from Disney PIXAR’s movie Up, and he chose Sofa Biz to make Carl and Ellie’s signature chairs. It took us a while to find the right fabric for both chairs, but we had a great time making them.

JD, SnowCat StudMuffin

JD, a Sofa Biz customer, recently picked up two large custom benches that we re-upholstered. These were not Granny’s couch cushions; these are steel-framed, all-weather cushions for Grand-Daddy’s Snowcat!

You won’t see many Snowcats unless you ski or snowboard a lot, or you’re a big fan of The Shining, National Treasure, or the first X Files film. Even so, Snowcats weren’t exactly a focal point; they merely got people from point A to point B in hostile, snowy, mountainous terrain. They range in size and capacity, but if the benches we made for JD are any indication, he’s got a big ‘Cat! When asked about the age of his machine, he said it is hard to place an exact date, although “… most [older snowcats] were built in the late ’60s, early ’70s.”

After a few mechanical tweaks, new wiring for the lights and stereo system, and some new carpet, the old ‘Cat will be reborn.  The cushions are the finishing touch.  (WE CAN’T WAIT TO SHOW YOU THE PICTURES!)

Regardless, last week I got just under 10 “robo” sales calls. You know the kind, where you’re not even granted the courtesy of speaking to a real person. Instead, it’s a recording, and an annoying one at that. Well, I decided to answer these calls. Am I crazy? Maybe, but I was testing a theory.

Scenario:
Answer a call from a phone number, usually with an out-of-state area code. Robot begins talking, and it’s not a cool robotic voice, either; I might actually listen if it was the voice of Robot B9 from Lost in Space. “Danger! Danger! You are paying too much for car insurance …” But I digress.

One option would be to begin screaming at the robotic voice, but that isn’t really productive. These calls aren’t wired for sound, so to speak. Instead, just dial ’0′ and another friendly, female voiced robot will speak to you, notifying you that you’ve opted out of these solicitations.

So don’t get mad. Get even and answer those annoying calls and take the 10 seconds to opt out by dialing ’0′ and confirming. Since I opted out last week, I haven’t received a single sales call! : )
